The university has clarified that this 5% quota will come into effect starting from the current academic session itself. This means that students who have already appeared for the entrance examinations for admission this year will be able to avail themselves of this facility. Admission to Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) courses at JNU is conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), while admission to PhD programs is primarily granted based on UGC NET/JRF scores. However, students applying under the staff quota must still fulfill the necessary eligibility criteria; passing these national-level examinations remains mandatory. Admission will not be granted solely based on the reservation quota without having successfully cleared the requisite examinations.

A reservation system for the children of employees already exists in several central universities across the country. For instance, similar facilities are provided at institutions such as Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University. However, the specific percentage of reserved seats and the governing rules may vary from one institution to another.
