Kolkata: Over 8,000 super-sensitive booths have been identified across West Bengal in the first phase of polling on April 23 at a time when stringent measures have been taken by the Election Commission of India to ensure violence-free and intimidation-free polls.
Meanwhile, around 135 rogues, history sheeters and musclemen have been nabbed by the police across Bengal from Sunday till Monday afternoon. Arrests have been made from Malda Murshidabad, Balurghat, North and South 24 Parganas (Bhangar is known for rampant and recurrent violences) among others, people in the know told ET.
Around 200-plus spots in areas including Malda, Murshidabad and Cooch Behar, where poll and post-poll violences have occurred in the past, have been identified and SPs and DMs are visiting these locations several times to build confidence and monitor the spots themselves. "Many rogues and musclemen have been surrendering on their own at a time when ECI has taken all-round measures to ensure free and fair polls in Bengal," a top ECI official said.
Artificial intelligence & Control Command Centre
The ECI has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-based surveillance system to flag booth jamming and other irregularities inside and outside the polling booths during the assembly elections in West Bengal.
An AI-enabled Control Command Centre at West Bengal CEO's office, control rooms at the DEO's office and returning officers' office -- a three-tier system is being evolved and is in place and the testing process is underway.
