New Delhi: Sony Pictures Networks India has bagged the exclusive broadcast and digital streaming rights for the 20th edition of the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, scheduled to be held from September 19 to October 4 in Japan.

The mega-deal means that the continental showpiece will be telecast on Sony Sports Network channels and live-streamed on digital OTT platform Sony LIV across India and the subcontinent.

India aiming to replicate Asian Games 2023 performance

India will enter the continental games aiming to replicate or better their performance of the historic outing in the previous edition, where it clinched a record 107 medals.

“We are proud to bring this continental multi-sport event back to Sony Pictures Networks for the third time,” Rajesh Kaul, Chief Revenue Officer and Business Head – Sports and International, SPNI, said in a release.

The global multi-sport event will feature 41 disciplines, including 32 Olympic sports. New additions in the Asian Games programme include mixed martial arts and surfing.

Meanwhile, traditional events like cricket, tennis, esports, kabaddi, sepak takraw and kurash will continue to be part of the programme.

India favourites to defend Asian titles in both men’s and women’s tournaments

Cricket is expected to hog plenty of limelight, especially in the Indian subcontinent. Both India’s men’s and women’s teams will be in contention for top honours. In the 2023 edition, which marked the return of cricket to the Asian Games programme, India bagged gold medals in both men’s and women’s tournaments.

“India’s historic performance at the last edition, where the nation crossed the 100-medal milestone for the first time, has ignited unprecedented interest in multi-sport events,” Rajesh Kaul added.

“The stage is set for another unforgettable chapter with the inclusion of cricket, along with a formidable Indian contingent ready to chase new milestones.

“We are committed to delivering immersive coverage that celebrates every medal and inspires millions across the country as our athletes strive for greatness once again.”

With India’s T20I series against the West Indies overlapping with the Asian Games, the Indian selectors are pondering tapping into the large IPL talent pool to enable the country to field two T20I teams simultaneously.
