Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium is in Uppal, Hyderabad in Telangana. It is also called Uppal Stadium. It is owned and managed by Hyderabad Cricket Association. It is the home ground of Hyderabad men’s and women’s cricket teams. In IPL, it is the home stadium of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The stadium is built on around 15 acres of land and can hold about 39,200 spectators. It has also hosted big IPL finals in 2017 and 2019. It was also used for its first ICC event during the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The stadium is named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium Pitch

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad is a batting-friendly ground. It is in Uppal, Telangana and can hold around 38,000 to 39,200 fans. It is the home ground of SRH.

The pitch here is known for good bounce and easy batting. Batters can play shots freely because the ball comes nicely on the bat. Fast bowlers can get some help early with movement, but it usually becomes easier to bat as the match goes on. Spinners don’t get much help unless the pitch is very dry.

This ground often produces high scores. Totals above 180 are common, and big chases also happen here.

The boundaries are not very long, especially on the square side. Straight boundaries are around 70 to 75 meters and square boundaries are shorter at about 63 to 68 meters. That helps batters hit more fours and sixes.

On average, first innings score is around 166 runs. Teams batting second have a slight edge in wins, but both batting first and chasing can work.

Big records here include SRH’s 286/6, which is the highest IPL total at this ground. Abhishek Sharma also scored 141 not out here. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken the most wickets at this venue.

Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium Features

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium was first used after Hyderabad Cricket Association stopped using Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium. Earlier that old ground hosted limited international matches from 1955 to 2003.

HCA decided to build its own stadium because they did not have full control over the old ground, which was owned by the sports authority. The new stadium was planned in 2003 and the government approved it quickly. Land was given in Uppal for construction.

At first, the naming rights were sold. Visaka Industries won it and the stadium was briefly named Visakha International Cricket Stadium in 2004 after paying a big amount.

Later, the name was changed to Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This change also involved financial settlement terms with the company that had the naming rights.

The stadium has two ends called Pavilion End and North End. The North End was later named after VVS Laxman to honor him after retirement.

Over time, the stadium has been upgraded many times. Floodlights were added in 2008. Roof covers for stands were added in 2013. A major renovation happened before the 2023 World Cup, where seats, floodlights, screens, and fan facilities were improved. Another round of upgrades came before IPL 2025 with support from Sunrisers Hyderabad.
