Former Indian selector and player Krishanmachari Srikkanth revealed the reason behind not selecting Rohit Sharma in the 2011 World Cup after 15 years of glory. "The sun will rise again" was the famous tweet Rohit Sharma made when he was omitted from the squad. "Srikkanth now clarified that the team was trying to include half all-rounders that keep no space for Rohit Sharma in the squad.
Well, by that time, Rohit Sharma had already won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni's captaincy. However, Rohit has expressed his disappointment at missing the WC. Srikkanth repeated that Rohit particularly had no flaws but it was the team's strategy.
Chheeka claimed that they thought like how they did in 1983. He even expressed his pride in sticking with the decision given the fact that Yuvraj Singh was Player of the Tournament with his all round performance. On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said,
"In every interview, he says, I missed the 2011 World Cup. I feel bad for him even today. I told Rohit last year, I'm sorry, boss. It's not by purpose, but it's just that we want to take those half all-rounders. Our thought process was similar to that of the 1983 World Cup. And at the end of the day, who was the Player of the Tournament? Yuvraj Singh, with the ball and bat. In some matches, Sehwag, Sachin and Suresh Raina would have bowled a few overs. Even Yusuf Pathan is a half all-rounder."
He said,
“So in all these things, unfortunately, what happened, this half-all-rounder concept, Rohit Sharma got, poor fellow, he could not find a place. He was actually good enough to play in the 2011 World Cup, but poor boy missed out."
Rohit Sharma eyeing 2027 ODI World Cup
After the 2011 World Cup, Rohit has been a part of all the ODI World Cups he played. However, the dreams were shattered. 330 runs in 2015, leading the board with 648 runs in 2019, including a record number of 5 centuries, and then finally leading the team in 2023 ODI World Cup final, scoring 579 runs- the wait elongated for Ro.
Even though he won the ICC 2024 T20 Men's World Cup in Barbados, he is desperately preparing for the 2027 World Cup. He has shed a significant amount of weight. and has been in sublime form as he eyes for his final run of international career.
