Cricket Gully | April 22, 2026 11:39 AM CST

Shreyas Iyer has proved himself once again in Indian Premier League 2026. The right-hand batsman has been leading Punjab Kings from the front as a leader and a batsman.

Punjab Kings are the only team that remains undefeated this season and has topped the points table. Iyer has been a major part of their journey so far. He has amassed 208 runs so far in the current season with an average of 52 and a strike rate of 182.46. He has already scored three half-centuries in the season and played a vital role in the three successful run chases.

Shreyas Iyer leads PBKS with his fine form in IPL 2026

Iyer is someone who can stay calm under pressure and finish matches with perfection. His leadership qualities are not new as well. The right-hand batter has led Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 and later Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024. He has even led Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.

With so much quality in his bag, Iyer has failed to make his way into the Indian T20I side. He had previously stated that Lack of Communication, fitness related issues are the cause for him being out of the national team and Central contract.

Sanjay Manjrekar points that Iyer's exclusion from the side is unfair.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has come forward to back Iyer and has questioned the selectors' decision. Talking to Sportstar, Manjrekar stated that the batsman has been treated unfairly.

Sanjay Manjrekar said:

"They didn't give him a contract, and it must have hurt him. He played for Mumbai and was recalled for the Indian side for the England ODI series. He was magnificent in the Champions Trophy and then performed in the IPL, but was not selected,"

He added:

"It is unfair for a player like Shreyas Iyer if you don't get a chance in the team despite that kind of performance. It is valid if he is not happy with someone for his removal,"

This points out that players need to prove their worth consistently not just in domestic or international matches but also in IPL matches as well. Iyer's performances in domestic matches, international games and even in the IPL are surely the best to be counted on for the right hander.
