New Delhi: OpenAI has sparked fresh buzz in the AI space after teasing what appears to be its next-generation image model, widely expected to be called GPT-Image-2. The company posted a picture that looked like a ChatGPT conversation on X in a cryptic post, saying, “This is not a screenshot.” The implication is obvious: the very image must have been created by AI, rather than taken on an actual interface.
The teaser has become viral, with users testing and uploading similar hyper-realistic ‘fake screenshots’. Other posts display fake announcements, such as a fake homepage and even a newspaper front page, that the launch of GPT-Image-2 has occurred. Although OpenAI has not publicly released information, the teaser indicates that the model may blur the distinction between actual imagery of UI and images produced by AI.

There are numerous users on X who have published persuasive photos that resemble actual screenshots. A popular piece of fake news circulated an announcement by a fake The New York Times story that GPT-Image-2 had been a headline. Another shows a fake OpenAI website mocking a future GPT-5.5 release.
GPT-Image-2 is here! 👌
The new image model is especially good with text rendering, as you can see here. It’s rolling out right now to all OpenAI users, and should become available to you *today*. In fact you might already have it!

These instances demonstrate an increasing ability of AI image models to produce very realistic UI elements and text-heavy images. This might have significant repercussions, including design prototyping and misinformation risks. OpenAI has not made any official statements regarding these particular images, but the time matches with its teaser.

The teaser occurs at a very critical time for OpenAI. The data provided by Apptopia shows that the number of app daily active users of the company has been dropping since the end of last year. Meanwhile, rivals such as Google Gemini and Claude have been making inroads, cutting into the market share of OpenAI.
The dominance of OpenAI is said to have reduced from almost 80 per cent to slightly more than 50 per cent as competitors launch competitive features and enhancements. This renders the introduction of a new image model that is compelling even more critical in regaining momentum.
Can GPT-Image-2 drive the next AI boom?
Image creation has been a successful promotional tool in the past. The trend of viral art and stylised images created by AI has attracted millions of users to platforms. OpenAI itself experienced an increase in activity when image models were released.
If GPT-Image-2 unleashes more advanced features than realistic screenshots, like, say, better text rendering, layout fidelity, or real-world simulation, it might find itself in the news again. In the meantime, the teaser indicates that OpenAI is getting ready to play another big role in the rapidly growing AI game.
