New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely. He took this decision after the talks in Pakistan failed. Trump said he was waiting for a united resolution from Tehran, but just hours later, Iran attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The tension has increased further due to this incident.

Iranian guards attack

The British Army’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said Iran’s paramilitary force, the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), fired on the container ship at around 7:55 am. The Iranian gunboat did not give any warning to the ship. The ship was damaged in the attack, but no one was injured and there was no harm to the environment.

Iran’s semi-official news agencies Fars and Tasnim confirmed the attack. Fars claimed that Iran was legally enforcing its control over Hormuz. This strait is the mouth of the Persian Gulf, through which about 20 percent of the world’s crude oil and natural gas passes.

Donald Trump’s claim

Trump wrote on Truth Social that Iran is collapsing economically. He said, "Iran is ruining economically. They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately. They are craving for cash." Trump alleges that Iran wants to keep the strait closed to save face on the street, while the US is maintaining a blockade on Iranian ports.

Earlier, the US Army had taken action against Iranian ships. The US had seized an Iranian container ship and stopped an oil tanker belonging to Iran in the Indian Ocean.

warnings from both sides

Iran has not yet given any official response to Trump’s announcement of extending the ceasefire. Both countries have warned that if no agreement is reached then fighting may start again. The plan for talks in Pakistan has failed, due to which the situation has become more complicated.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered an international waterway, even though it is in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. Shippers around the world depend on it. This attack has increased the possibility of impact on global oil supply and trade.
