An airbase in Suffolk was placed into lockdown after a person tried to gain entry without proper identification.

Security personnel at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk swiftly responded just before 8am today following an alleged attempt by an individual to gain entry without the necessary "proper identification".

A representative for the airbase said: "An individual attempted to enter RAF Lakenheath at Gate 2 without proper identification.

"The gate barriers were deployed and security forces personnel worked quickly to stop the vehicle from entering the installation."

A person was taken into custody by the Ministry of Defence police, the East Anglian Daily Times reported.

RAF Lakenheath is owned by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) but is leased to and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF).

It is understood it currently only hosts United States Air Force (USAF) units and military personnel. It also hosts the 48th Fighter Wing, also known as the "Liberty Wing," which operates F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning II aircraft.
