The first ever jackpot winner on ITV's Catchphrase has shared what the fun game show was really like behind the scenes. Adei Bundy appeared on the popular programme back in 2016, when it proved to be life-changing after she bagged herself a whopping £50,000.
It took four years before anyone claimed the coveted prize, with the show first returning to screens in 2012 and no one bagging it until Adei did. The retail worker and aspiring actress cracked the elusive Super Catchphrase round and also landed a holiday in the process. Now, nearly a decade on, Adei told Smooth Spins Casino - Smooth Radio's gaming brand - all about the secret strategy she used to get ahead on the show, and lifted the lid on what host Stephen Mulhern is really like off-camera. Adei knew that she had "already won" before even landing the huge cash prize.
"I will never forget a producer telling us backstage that 26,000 people apply every year, and they only pick around 24 contestants," she said. "He said even getting chosen should feel like a win. Then he said, 'We have never had a jackpot winner, so today could be the day.' And it was."
When asked what the host was like in person, she replied: "He was lovely. Before filming started, he came over, wished us luck and told us to enjoy it."
She also touched on a moment that left Stephen in stitches. Adei shared: "At one point, I guessed 'a rocket in his pocket,' which made Stephen laugh.
"Then I told him I was ambidextrous, and when he asked what that meant, I said I was 'good with both hands.'" She added: "I kept unintentionally making these little innuendos, but I was being completely innocent."
Speaking about what it was like on the set of the ITV show, Adei explained: "It felt surreal because I had watched it so many times on TV. The screen looked huge, and there were cameras everywhere.
"The biggest surprise was the audience. I do not think I realised there was one until I walked out and saw 200 people staring back at me."
