What really happened to Agnes at the dentist in The Testaments?

The Handmaid's Tale spin-off The Testaments delivered one of its most disturbing moments as Agnes faced a horrifying ordeal at the dentist. Episode four saw Agnes (Chase Infiniti) return to Dr Grove's (Randal Edwards) surgery for a serious dental procedure.

Unlike her previous visit where she was groped during a check-up, this time she was sedated for what the doctor called a "routine bonding". Viewers were left to piece together what happened during the procedure, but the sinister implications became clear when Agnes discovered her shirt had been unbuttoned.

The episode ended with the young woman horrified as she realised Grove likely assaulted her while she was unconscious. The TV adaptation differs significantly from Margaret Atwood's novel, where Agnes is sexually assaulted whilst awake.

In the book, she is "horribly embarrassed" by the doctor's advances and decides to "pretend it isn't happening". Whilst Agnes doesn't report Grove out of fear of punishment, the novel reveals he has another victim in Agnes' circle. However, the dentist eventually faces brutal retribution for his crimes.

The disturbing storyline marks a dark turning point for the series, highlighting the abuse of power and vulnerability of women in Gilead's oppressive society.
