New Delhi: In a shocking case of animal cruelty, more than 30 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned, and most of them died in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal, police said.

The incident took place in the Shyamla Hills area of the state capital. Over 30 dogs were allegedly given poison within the Ansal Apartments complex, located in the VIP zone, according to the police.

The police said almost all of these dogs have reportedly died, while several others are said to be in critical condition. They further said that they are investigating the incident and scrutinising CCTV footage of the area.

Outrage among animal lovers

The incident has sparked outrage among animal lovers and residents. It is alleged that these deaths occurred over the past 15 days.

According to Sunita Joshi, a local, said she was the first to spot the dogs writhing in pain. She said she immediately alerted other animal lovers, and arrangements were made to provide medical treatment to the affected animals.

A formal complaint regarding this matter has been lodged at the Shyamla Hills Police Station, following which the police have initiated an investigation.

The residents asserted that this is not an isolated incident; a similar case of dog poisoning was reported in the same locality about a month and a half ago, resulting in the deaths of approximately 17 dogs.

No dog bite case

Speaking to TV9 Bharatvarsh, Sunita Joshi stated that there has not been a single reported case of a dog bite in the area to date. Despite this, the dogs have been killed by poisoning. She alleged that all the dogs can’t fall ill simultaneously due to the heat and subsequently die. “We have filed a complaint regarding this matter at the Shyamla Hills Police Station in Bhopal,” she added.

According to the police, post-mortem examination has been conducted at Bhopal’s State Veterinary Hospital, and their viscera samples have been sent for forensic analysis.

Shyamla Hills ASI Mohan Sharma stated that further action will be taken only after the reports are received. Currently, the police are questioning local residents and scrutinising CCTV footage in an effort to identify the culprits and take strict legal action against them.
