New Delhi: A 24-year-old lawyer died by suicide by jumping off a Kanpur court building over alleged mental harassment by his father. The lawyer posted a two-page suicide note on his WhatsApp status before ending his life.
Priyanshu Srivastava jumped from the fifth floor of the building on Thursday, triggering chaos in the court premises, police said. He was rushed to Ursula Horsman Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Srivastava, in the two-page suicide note he left behind, mentioned multiple incidents from childhood and adolescence during which he alleged his father mentally tortured him.
Stripped for drinking mango juice without permission
The lawyer’s suicide note stated that when he was 6-year-old, his father stripped him and forced him out of the house for drinking mango juice from the refrigerator without permission.
Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal told PTI that the incident traumatised him and also left a deep mental scar on his memory, leading to persistent feelings of guilt and inferiority. The note stated, “May God never give anyone a father like mine. He also requested that his father not touch his body.
Pressured for choosing Computer over Physical Education
In his suicide note, the lawyer recalled a 2016 incident and said when he was in Class 9, he wanted to opt for Physcial Education, but his father pressured him to choose Computer. His father allegedly threatened him with similar punishment if he did not follow his instructions.
According to the police, the lawyer has also requested that his mother should not be harassed after his death and blamed no one for his move.
The suicide note also mentioned several other issues the lawyer was facing, including mounting family responsibilities, financial and mental distress due to his father’s ill health.
The police are examining the content of the suicide letter and also reviewing CCTV footage from the court premises. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination, and an investigation has been launched, the police said.
