Former England Test spin-bowling all-rounder Samit Patel has announced his retirement from English domestic cricket at the age of 41. This decision has come a few days after the six-month ban from T20 Blast. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had banned Samit Patel because he participated in the World Legends Pro League held in Goa this year. This league was not approved by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to ECB rules, players playing in unsanctioned leagues cannot play in English domestic cricket for six months. Former Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle has also been banned for the same reason.
Samit Patel announced his retirement
Announcing his retirement, Samit Patel said, 'I am ending my domestic career, but I will never move away from cricket. I am now looking forward to taking my next steps into coaching, mentoring and commentary. This game has given me a lot. I have made lifelong friends and the memories of traveling around the world and winning trophies will always be with me.
While talking to BBC, he further said that there was a lot of uncertainty about playing in the World Legends League, but now we have to leave it behind and move forward. He said that perhaps he would not have played in that league, but now this decision has brought forward his retirement. His decision has become a topic of discussion in the cricket world, but he made it clear that his relationship with cricket will always remain.
