70s rock legend Sammy Hagar has issued a brutally honest career admission, warning fans that "I don't know how long I can keep doing this". The 78-year-old-old Red Rocker soared to stardom in the 1970s with his band Van Halen, with chart-topping hits such as Jump, Panama, and Unchained. He also enjoyed a successful solo career, scoring the 1984 smash hit I Can't Drive 55. The dad-of-four was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 for his contributions to hard rock and heavy metal music.
After three decades, Sammy Hagar returns to the UK for the Best of All World Tours, featuring a supergroup lineup and a rare three-night residency at London's British Airways ARC. Now, in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the musician has revealed what his future in music will look like as he approaches his 79th birthday this autumn.
He told us: "You know, it's really so crazy. I don't work that much anymore. I don't go on big tours every year because many years ago, I decided I'm only gonna tour when I want to. I'm not trying to get rich and famous here, you know? I'm good with who I am and where I'm at in my life."
"But I also don't want to ever get to a point in my life where I'm going, 'Oh, geez, I have to go on tour. Oh man, I gotta play a show tonight. Oh, I don't feel like it'. So I only work as much as I know I'm capable of doing it with all my heart, and I think that's really important in my age that I don't go out and do bad shows."
"It's really for the fans. I'm coming to England and doing 4 shows, and I'm going, 'Wow, why am I doing this? I'm doing it for the fans.' But I don't know how long I can keep doing this at my age.
"I'm gonna walk up to that microphone one of these days, and I'm gonna go, 'Oops, I ain't got it anymore', and then I gotta quit on stage. I don't wanna do that. I can sing and perform, and I have one of the best bands in the world, I mean, these players are just unbelievable."
Despite entering his twilight years, the musician revealed that he performs better now than he did in his 40s. He explained: "I think I'm better than I was when I was in my 40s, and I mean that. I mean, I can't jump off, I can't jump as high.
"I can't run as fast, but I can still play as good, and I sing better. I just feel like I'm as good as I've ever been and maybe better, more for real, that's for sure. I'm more believable, and I'm a better performer now." It comes after the rocker, who enjoyed a packed life of sex, drugs, drink and rock and roll, has transformed his life and now regularly works out, takes vitamins and is undergoing stem cell treatment to maintain his youthful looks.
He explained to us: "I take things that stop my body from getting stiff - anti-inflammatories and vitamins, things that nutrition that you need in your body as you get older, your body stops producing them. I do stem cell therapy with an IV. I do it every six months. I put young stem cells in my body. And I feel the difference.
"I don't smoke, and I don't stay up later than I should. I just don't abuse myself. And I sing all the time. I don't really sing scales; I sing hard songs to sing. One of my favourite warm-up songs is Whiter Shade of Pale. It's like the scales are tough. So when I have a hard time singing that, I'm going, 'Oops, I need to work out a little bit more tomorrow and get ready for these shows.'
Tickets for these strictly limited 2026 performances went on sale on Friday (April 24) and are available to purchase through the AEG website.
