In light of the ongoing US blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social late Wednesday to suggest renaming the strategic waterway to the "Strait of Trump." His post included a map illustrating the maritime chokepoint under his proposed name. This statement follows Trump's earlier remarks, where he labeled the US naval blockade against Iran as "genius," claiming it would force Tehran to concede defeat while dismissing any potential agreements unless Iran renounces its nuclear ambitions.
Trump praised the effectiveness of the blockade, stating, "The blockade is genius. The blockade has been 100% foolproof. It shows how good our Navy is, I can tell you that. Nobody's going to play games. We have the greatest military in the world, and I built much of it during my first term and we've been building it since. Nobody is even close to us," he asserted.
He emphasized that any potential deal with Iran would depend on nuclear concessions. "They've come a long way. The question is whether or not they're going to go far enough. So at this moment, there will never be a deal unless they agree that there will be no nuclear weapons," Trump stated.
Despite the escalating rhetoric between Tehran and Washington, Iran seems unwilling to relinquish control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump's Strategy on Iran Hormuz as a Pressure Tactic
In a previous interview with Axios, Trump suggested that the blockade serves as a crucial strategy to pressure Iran regarding its nuclear program. He remarked, "The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing. They are choking like a stuffed pig. And it is going to be worse for them. They can't have a nuclear weapon," indicating his firm stance on the issue.
Trump also dismissed Iran's request to first reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the blockade before engaging in nuclear discussions. He insisted that Iran must address US concerns prior to any relaxation of restrictions. The report noted that while Trump currently sees the blockade as his main leverage, he might contemplate military action if Iran fails to engage in negotiations.
