Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit India to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held in Delhi next month. The Foreign Ministry gave this information on Wednesday.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a press conference that Lavrov will also hold a bilateral meeting with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar during his visit on May 14-15.

“During his two-day visit to India, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will participate in the full-format meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in New Delhi,” he said.

Russia’s state news agency Tass quoted Zakharova as saying that the meeting, chaired by India, will provide a valuable platform for meaningful discussion on current international issues and prospects for strengthening global governance, especially among countries representing the majority of the world’s population.

He further said, “Special focus will be given to strengthening strategic partnerships in view of preparations for the 18th BRICS Summit to be held in New Delhi in September this year.”

Zakharova said that foreign ministers of BRICS allies will participate in several sessions during the meeting. He said that during Lavrov’s visit to New Delhi, he is also scheduled to have a full-format bilateral programme, including talks with his Indian counterpart.

“It is expected that the discussions will cover all aspects of bilateral relations, including a program of upcoming meetings at the highest, highest and working levels,” Zakharova said. Special attention will be paid to preparations for the meetings of the Intergovernmental Russian-Indian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. Also, all mutually beneficial agendas will be reviewed.
