Synopsis

A neurologist from Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad, Dr Sudhir Kumar, says that people do not need a “perfect lifestyle” to improve longevity. In a post, he explains that even very small daily changes—like a few extra minutes of sleep, slightly more physical activity, and adding a bit more vegetables, can collectively add years to life and improve overall healthspan.

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on extreme diets, intense fitness routines, and strict lifestyle rules when it comes to living longer. But a leading medical expert has now pointed out that this “perfect lifestyle” idea may not be necessary at all. Instead, he suggests that small, steady habits followed consistently are enough to make a real difference in long-term health and lifespan.

The insight was shared by Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he explained how even minor daily improvements can add up over time in ways most people underestimate.

Small daily habits that quietly build longer life

Dr Kumar stressed that people often ignore small changes because they look too minor to matter. However, he said these tiny upgrades can actually lead to measurable benefits if done regularly.

He wrote, “Tiny upgrades are associated with real gains: 5 minutes of additional sleep, 2 minutes of additional moderate-vigorous physical activity, and adding half a serving of vegetables per day. These three if done together could add about 1 year to your life.”

The idea is not about changing everything overnight, but about improving small parts of daily routine in a way that can realistically be maintained.

Better consistency can improve healthspan too

He further explained that slightly larger improvements, still within practical reach for most people, can do more than just extend lifespan. They can also increase the number of healthy years a person lives.

Dr Kumar noted, “For longer healthspan, a combined improvement of around 24 minutes of sleep per day, 3.7 minutes of moderate-vigorous activity, and a modest improvement in diet quality could together add up to nearly 4 additional years of healthspan.”

He also clarified that healthspan refers to the years lived without major chronic illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, COPD, and dementia. So the focus is not just on living longer, but staying healthier for longer.

Why perfection is not the real goal

A key part of his message is that people often get stuck trying to follow “perfect” routines, which are difficult to sustain in real life. Instead, he suggests that consistency in basic habits is what truly matters.

As he put it, “Consistency across the basics rewards good long-term health.”

The point is that regular sleep, slightly more movement, and small improvements in food choices are far more effective when maintained steadily, even if they are not perfect.

He also summed up the overall idea in simple terms, saying, “Sleeping a little more, moving a little more, and eating a little better could together add up to around 9 extra healthy years.”
