Meteorological Department forecast: Rainfall will be above normal in May, with heat waves likely in Gujarat

Arrival of south-west monsoon in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is expected around 14-16 May.

New Delhi. The Meteorological Department said that in May, there is a possibility of heat wave for more days than normal in some parts of the Himalayan Terai region, eastern coastal states, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The weather department also said that average rainfall is likely to be above normal over the entire country during May, as the arrival of southwest monsoon in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is expected around May 14-16.

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said in a statement, the minimum temperature is predicted to be above normal in many parts of the country during May 2026. However, minimum temperatures are forecast to be below normal or near normal over many areas of northwest India as well as parts of central India, adjoining areas of peninsular India and southern parts of northeast India.

The IMD also said that above normal rainfall is forecast across India in May, although parts of East, Northeast and East-Central India may receive below normal rainfall.

Regarding the south-west monsoon, Mohapatra said, the monsoon may reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 14-16. According to the IMD, currently the neutral conditions of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the equatorial Pacific Ocean are gradually evolving towards El Nino. El Nino is a cycle in which the temperature of the waters of the central Pacific Ocean periodically increases.

It said the latest forecast from the Monsoon Mission Coupled Forecasting System indicates that El Nino conditions may develop during the southwest monsoon season. The weather department said the country was affected by seven western disturbances during April.
