Bengal Elections 2026: Re-polling at 15 booths after complaints, voting started again amid allegations and counter-allegations

The election stir in West Bengal has once again intensified. Amidst the controversies that arose after the second phase of voting, re-polling is being conducted today at many booths in South 24 Parganas district. The Election Commission has taken this step by taking the complaints of irregularities seriously, so that fair voting can be ensured.

Voting is being conducted again today at a total of 15 polling stations in South 24 Parganas district. These include 11 polling stations in Magrahat West assembly constituency and 4 in Diamond Harbor area. Voting will start from 7 am till 6 pm. Strict security arrangements have been made so that this time the process remains completely peaceful.

Why was the decision of re-polling taken?

The Election Commission has taken this decision on the basis of the reports of returning officers and observers of the concerned areas. In these reports, some "physical conditions" And irregularities were pointed out. According to the information, the Commission had received 29 complaints from Diamond Harbor and 13 from Magrahat.

Generally, when there is a possibility of irregularities during voting, then re-polling is demanded. This includes complaints like EVM malfunction, booth capturing, intimidating voters or breach of voting secrecy. In such cases, the Election Commission assesses the situation and takes a decision on re-polling.

Decision pending on Falta seat

According to an Election Commission official, the final decision regarding re-polling in Falta assembly constituency of Diamond Harbor has not been taken yet. The relevant report for this is awaited, after which a decision will be taken.

Political turmoil over re-polling

The politics of the state has also heated up regarding this issue. The BJP has alleged large-scale irregularities in some booths falling under the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency. This area is associated with Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee. The Election Commission has also appointed its special observer to investigate the allegations, so that the truth can come out.

At the same time, Trinamool Congress has rejected BJP’s allegations. Party leader Kunal Ghosh says that BJP is making such demands due to fear of defeat. According to him, the public inclination is already clear and the results will come accordingly. On the other hand, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that irregularities were deliberately created at many booths so that the ruling party could benefit. However, he has also welcomed the decision of re-polling.

Record voting increased interest

Record voting has been recorded in West Bengal this time in the assembly elections. According to the Election Commission, overall voting took place at about 92 percent, which is the highest in the history of the state. In the first phase on April 23, 93.19 percent voting took place, while in the second phase, 91.66 percent votes were cast. Earlier in 2011, around 84 percent voting was considered the highest.
