Friends, Meta, the world’s largest social media handling company, has had mixed performance in its first quarter. While on one hand the tech giant is expanding its total user base, on the other hand it is also facing a clear decline in daily engagement. Millions of users are becoming less active, forcing the company to rethink its strategy—especially on Instagram, let’s know the complete details.
1. Increase in total users, but decline in daily activity
Meta reported that in March 2026, the number of its “Family Daily Active People” (DAP) reached 3.56 billion.
This is an increase of 4% compared to last year.
However, compared to the previous quarter (December 2025), the number of daily users has declined by about 2 crore.
This decline includes activity on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. While this decline may seem small given the sheer scale of Meta, it is indicative of changing user behavior.
2. Reasons behind the decline
Internet disruptions in Iran
Restrictions on WhatsApp in Russia
However, industry reports highlight some deep concerns:
Degradation in content feed quality
Less relevant and attractive suggestions
Decrease in user satisfaction and engagement
In social media, the quality of content has a direct impact on user retention, and low feed relevance seems to be a big problem.
3. Decline in feed quality across platforms
Users are increasingly dissatisfied with what they see in their feeds.
Algorithms are not consistently showing meaningful or interesting content
Users are spending less time on the platform
Engagement levels are gradually falling
This indicates that Meta’s recommendation system needs significant improvement to meet user expectations.
4. Major algorithm changes planned for Instagram
To address these challenges, Meta is preparing to make major updates to Instagram’s recommendation algorithm.
The idea is to make the feed more relevant, useful and engaging
The company aims to improve user experience and user retention
5. Huge investment in Artificial Intelligence
To solve these problems, Meta is increasing its investment in AI.
Planned investment: $10 billion (approximately ₹94,947 crore)
Focus: Smarter suggestions and better content delivery
This reflects Meta’s strong commitment to regaining user engagement through innovative technology.
