Synopsis

A massive prehistoric snake named Vasuki indicus has been discovered in Gujarat. Fossilized bones suggest this ancient serpent lived 47 million years ago. It may have stretched up to 50 feet, rivaling the largest snakes known. This discovery sheds light on India's potential role in the origin of giant snakes. The findings are based on 27 fossilized vertebrae.

Move over, myths—this one’s real. Deep beneath the dusty grounds of Gujarat, scientists have unearthed the remains of a colossal prehistoric snake that could rival the biggest reptile ever known to mankind!

Dubbed Vasuki indicus, after the legendary serpent tied to Lord Shiva, this ancient beast slithered across Earth 47 million years ago—and it was no ordinary snake. Experts say it may have stretched a jaw-dropping 50 feet (15 meters) long. Yes, you read that right—longer than a city bus and easily one of the largest snakes to ever exist.

Bones That Tell a Terrifying Tale

The discovery comes from the Panandhro lignite mine in Gujarat’s Kutch region, where researchers stumbled upon 27 fossilised vertebrae, some still linked together. These weren’t tiny fragments—each bone hints at a thick, muscular body built like a living battering ram.

Scientists Debajit Datta and Sunil Bajpai, who led the study published in Scientific Reports, say the snake likely had a slow but deadly hunting style—lurking silently before ambushing prey, much like today’s anacondas.

A Rival to the Legendary Titanoboa?

The size estimates—between 11 to 15 meters—put Vasuki in the same terrifying league as Titanoboa, the undisputed heavyweight champion of snakes. While there’s still debate over exact measurements, one thing is clear: this creature was an apex predator of its time.

An Ancient Empire of Giant Snakes

Vasuki belonged to the mysterious madtsoiidae family—a group of snakes that ruled parts of Earth for nearly 100 million years. What’s even more mind-blowing? Scientists believe India could be the birthplace of these giant serpents, which later spread to Africa and Europe.

From Myth to Reality

Named after the mythical serpent Vasuki, this discovery blurs the line between legend and science. Was ancient folklore inspired by creatures like this? We may never know—but one thing’s certain:
