Bhopal/Jabalpur: On Saturday, rescue operations at the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district ramped up as specialized teams worked diligently to find four individuals who remain unaccounted for following a tragic boat accident that occurred on Thursday evening.
Currently, nine fatalities have been confirmed, with four individuals still missing, including three children and one adult, as reported by local authorities.
Anjul Ayank Mishra, the City Superintendent of Police for the Bargi zone, stated, “At this moment, the police have filed a ‘merg’ report under Section 174 of the CrPC. Further investigations will commence only after all bodies are recovered.”
Two days post the capsizing of the boat, which had 41 passengers aboard, the search area has been expanded to a five-kilometer radius downstream.
Army divers, along with disaster response teams, are spearheading the critical mission to locate the missing man and three children who have not been seen since the incident.
This unfortunate event, which has already resulted in nine deaths, has deeply affected the local community. Out of the 41 passengers on the ill-fated vessel, 28 were rescued shortly after the boat overturned.
The survivors are now sharing vital information about the moments leading up to the capsizing.
While the primary objective remains the recovery of the missing, a legal inquiry is also gaining momentum.
The officer added, “An investigation will be initiated once all bodies are recovered, and an FIR will be filed regarding the incident.”
This legal process will examine the safety measures in place during the boat trip and assess whether negligence or technical issues contributed to the high number of casualties.
The inquiry will likely investigate the boat's capacity and the availability of life-saving equipment for all passengers.
Meanwhile, families of the missing individuals are anxiously awaiting updates near the riverbanks. Despite the difficult conditions and the vastness of the backwaters, the combined efforts of military and civilian rescuers continue to navigate the challenging waters.
As the search area extends further into the reservoir, the operation remains the top priority for officials in Jabalpur district.
