In a significant development within the Big Bash League, the Sydney Sixers have announced the appointment of former Australian all-rounder James Hopes as their new head coach. The franchise revealed this decision on May 4, confirming that Hopes has signed a two-year contract for the role.
First-Time Head Coach Role for Hopes
At 47 years old, this marks James Hopes' inaugural position as a head coach at the professional level. Previously, he has served as an assistant coach under several prominent coaches worldwide. Currently, Hopes is the bowling coach for the Punjab Kings and is also associated with the Washington Freedom team in Major League Cricket. His coaching background is extensive, having worked with teams such as the Delhi Capitals, Brisbane Heat, Queensland Bulls, Hobart Hurricanes, and Tasmanian Tigers.
Replacing Greg Shipperd
Hopes takes over from Greg Shipperd, who was removed from his position midway through a two-year contract, despite leading the team to the BBL finals in January. Upon his appointment, Hopes expressed his honor in joining a prestigious club like the Sydney Sixers, known for its consistency, competitiveness, and strong fan engagement. He is eager to work with this talented team and achieve new successes in the BBL.
Impressive Playing Career
As a player, Hopes had a remarkable career, representing Queensland Bulls and playing 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is for Australia. Rachel Haines, the General Manager of Sydney Sixers, stated that Hopes possesses an exceptional cricketing mind and a wealth of experience in player development, making him an ideal choice for the team. Meanwhile, the Sydney Thunder remains the only team without a coach for the upcoming season after parting ways with Trevor Bayliss after five years.
