The Mumbai Indians defeat the Lucknow Super Giants by 6 wickets, ensuring the highest ever run chase in the Wankhede Stadium on May 4. Earlier in this IPL, MI recorded their highest successful chase at their ground, surpassing 221 against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29. And today they chased 229 runs, having 8 balls to spare.

Highest successful run chase by Mumbai Indians in the Wankhede Stadium:

Target FInal score Opponent Date
229 229/4 Lucknow Super Giants May 04, 2026
221 224/4 Kolkata Knight Riders March 29, 2026
213 214/4 Rajasthan Royals April 30, 2023
201 201/2 Sunrisers Hyderabad May 21, 2023
200 200/4 Royal Challengers Bengaluru May 9, 2023

This match marked Rohit Sharma's return after a brief gap as he was recovering from a hamstring injury. And on his first day, he sealed a 100+ run partnership with Ryan Rickelton that set the tone of the chase. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav failed once again, but Naman Dhir and Will Jacks took MI to the finishing line, with the later hiting a six in the 19th over.

With this, MI will keep their hope alive, as it will be their third win of the season, even though mathematically they are out of the season. Woes for Lucknow Super Giants continue, as it will be their sixth consecutive defeat this season.

LSG set a daunting platform with explosive middle overs

Lucknow Super Giants rode on a fierce batting display to post a commanding total after being asked to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium. The innings gathered early momentum through Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis, but it was Nicholas Pooran who completely shifted the tempo. His blistering knock turned the middle phase into a boundary fest, taking apart the bowlers with clean striking.

Even as wickets fell in quick succession around him, Rishabh Pant couldn’t convert his start, leaving the responsibility to the lower middle order. Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh ensured the innings didn’t lose steam, stitching together a valuable unbeaten stand. Their late acceleration, coupled with extras, pushed the scoring rate beyond eleven per over despite a brief slowdown after the 10th over.

MI’s opening blitz dismantles the chase pressure

Mumbai Indians approached the chase with intent, producing one of their most aggressive starts of the season. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma combined for a breathtaking opening partnership, attacking from ball one and neutralising the asking rate within the powerplay itself. Both batters brought up rapid half-centuries, dismantling both pace and spin with calculated hitting.

Although a cluster of wickets briefly interrupted the flow, the foundation laid upfront kept the innings firmly on track. Suryakumar Yadav played a short cameo, while Naman Dhir and Will Jacks ensured there were no further hiccups. The chase was defined by sustained attacking intent, with Mumbai maintaining a scoring rate well above twelve per over to overhaul the stiff target comfortably.
