Nainital: The lake city witnessed heavy hailstorms and torrential rain from Sunday night to Monday morning, bringing both challenges and relief.
While drains overflowed and garbage was swept into Naini Lake, the rainfall helped raise the lake’s water level to 80 feet, the highest in three years.
Rainfall details
Rain began late Sunday night, followed by hailstorms around 3 a.m. Strong winds accompanied the storm, and heavy rain continued for an hour. Afterward, moderate showers lasted until 8 a.m., with intermittent rain throughout the morning. The skies cleared by afternoon, allowing sunshine to break through.
According to the Irrigation Department’s lake control room, the city recorded 55 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Officials confirmed that the lake’s water level rose by more than five inches, reaching 80 feet.
Highest level in three years
Lake supervisor Ramesh Singh Gaida said the rainfall has improved the lake’s health. Data from the control room shows:
2026 – 80 feet
2025 – 79 feet
2024 – 79 feet
2023 – 82.1 feet
This year’s level is the highest since 2023, when the lake reached 82.1 feet.
Overflow and garbage issues
The heavy downpour caused drains to overflow, sweeping piles of garbage into the lake. Authorities are concerned about pollution and are monitoring the situation. While the rainfall has improved water levels, maintaining cleanliness remains a challenge.
Importance of Naini Lake
Naini Lake is the lifeline of Nainital, supporting tourism, local livelihoods, and the city’s identity. Rising water levels are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring a steady supply for residents and visitors. Tourists visiting Nainital nowadays are happy seeing this iconic lake full of water.
The recent rainfall has brought much-needed relief to Naini Lake, raising its water level to a three-year high. However, the overflow of garbage highlights the need for better waste management. With the monsoon season approaching, officials and residents must work together to preserve the health of Nainital’s iconic lake.
