Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she would not resign from her post despite her party’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, asserting that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) had achieved a “moral victory.”
Addressing a press conference after the results, Banerjee maintained that the outcome did not reflect a genuine loss for her party.

Claims of ‘Moral Victory’
Banerjee argued that while the numbers may not be in TMC’s favour, the party had the support of the people. She alleged that the election outcome was influenced by external pressure and described the verdict as “forceful.”
“If we had truly lost, I would have resigned,” she said, adding that stepping down under pressure was not an option.
Allegations Over Poll Process
The TMC chief also raised concerns about the conduct of the elections, claiming that the results were not entirely fair. She suggested that the process had been influenced in a way that did not accurately reflect voter sentiment.
Her remarks come amid a broader political debate over the credibility and transparency of the electoral process in the state.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive win in West Bengal, crossing the majority mark with ease. The party won over 200 seats, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state.
The result marks a historic moment for the BJP, which is set to form its first government in West Bengal.
As the BJP prepares to take charge, the focus will now shift to how both parties navigate the changing political landscape in West Bengal.
