New Delhi: Bharti Airtel is exploring network slicing to offer differentiated premium voice and data plans to subscribers to monetise its 5G infrastructure, industry executives said. This comes after rival Reliance Jio went public with its plans to use the technology for enterprise use-cases.

"Slicing is one of the few ways we can offer differentiated services to customers on 5G networks, unlocking the true potential of the technology," an industry executive told ET on condition of anonymity. "Airtel is currently exploring ways of using network slicing to boost its retail and enterprise offerings."

Network slicing allows operators to create multiple virtual networks on top of a physical network infrastructure, with each slice tailored to specific needs.


Globally, telecom operators in China and Finland have experimented with offering speed-based plans for mobile broadband as a means to monetise their 5G investments. According to industry estimates, such offerings have resulted in a 20-30% increase in average revenue per user, a key performance metric where Indian telcos lag far behind global peers.
