As many Brits hope that summer is on its way, the country may actually be returning to wintry conditions this week, as temperatures drop to -3C in mere hours. According to new maps from WXCHARTS, which uses MetDesk data, parts of North England and Scotland are due to get below freezing on Wednesday, with areas of Aberdeenshire reaching -3C.
England is due to be slightly milder, though it could still get to -1C in Cumbria - much colder than England's average May temperature of 16C. Separately, the Met Office forecast for Wednesday reads: "Most places dry with patchy cloud and sunny spells.
"A few showers breaking out across Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England. Temperatures below average for the time of year."
The weather agency also warned that temperatures could plunge to -5C overnight across northern regions, while overnight lows of 0C are anticipated further south.
Most areas will remain "dry" today, with "variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells" throughout the country. There will be "showery outbreaks of rain" across the north, where conditions are likely to turn "cold".
"Cloud and patchy rain" is forecast to push southwards tonight, the Met Office added.
Scotland faces "blustery showers" that could fall as snow across the Northern Isles (Orkney and Shetland) this evening, according to the latest forecast.
Temperatures are also predicted to fall below the seasonal average on Wednesday.
The Met Office forecasts overnight lows of -4C across northern areas and -2C in the south. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to become considerably milder as the week progresses.
Its forecast for Thursday to Saturday states: "Largely dry at first with some sunny spells and fairly cool. Increasing chance of showers on Friday and rain possible in the south on Saturday. Turning warmer."
