Washington: An important diplomatic turning point has emerged amid increasing tension between America and Iran. Taking a big decision on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced the temporary halt of his “Project Freedom” initiative. This step is being considered as a strategic move towards a possible agreement, which will give time to finalize the talks between the two countries.
While sharing the information on his social media platform, Trump said that this decision has been taken after the request of many countries, especially Pakistan. However, he made it clear that even though the project is being stopped, the US naval blockade in the area will continue as before.
What is ‘Project Freedom’?
“Project Freedom” is a strategic initiative of America, whose objective is to ensure the safe movement of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This sea route is considered very important for global oil supply. There has been tension between America and Iran regarding this area for a long time, to reduce which this project was started.
America’s strategy regarding the agreement
Trump said in his statement that this temporary pause will allow it to be tested whether the two sides can reach a final agreement. Describing the recent military operations as “extremely successful”, he indicated that the US will maintain its pressure even during the talks. He also made it clear that there will be no relaxation in the maritime blockade, which makes it clear that America wants to maintain its strong position.
Iran’s strong reaction
Iran has reacted sharply to this decision of America. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said such steps could jeopardize the safety of shipping in the region. He also said that Iran will maintain its control over the Strait of Hormuz and will not tolerate foreign military presence for long.
Increasing pressure regarding nuclear agreement
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also clarified that the direction of peace depends on Iran’s nuclear program. He said that only if Iran accepts America’s conditions, the situation can become normal.
Rubio also said that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is very important for global energy supply and America is making active efforts in this direction. Describing the US military presence as “defensive”, he said that talks are going on at the diplomatic level and efforts are being made to find a peaceful solution.
