In a remarkable display of skill, former Australian captain Aaron Finch commended Sanju Samson for his outstanding contribution to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during their emphatic eight-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday night in IPL 2026. Samson earned the Player of the Match title for his impressive unbeaten score of 87 runs off 52 deliveries, featuring seven fours and six sixes, which propelled CSK to successfully chase down the 156-run target in just 17.3 overs. His composed innings was pivotal in securing a vital win for the Super Kings as they strive for a playoff spot.
Finch Discusses Pressure on High-Profile Players
During an appearance on ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut show, Finch shared insights on the intense pressure that accompanies high-profile signings like Samson, particularly when joining a prestigious franchise such as CSK. He noted, "He missed out the first couple of games, didn't he? All of a sudden, there was a massive panic that what has CSK done?" referring to the initial struggles Samson faced in the tournament. Finch emphasized that two games in T20 cricket are a small sample size and maintaining consistent performance throughout a season is a significant challenge.
Finch recognized the substantial expectations placed on players like Samson, who are brought into teams with high ambitions. Prior to last year's auction, Samson transitioned from the Rajasthan Royals (RR) to CSK for ₹18 crore, while Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moved to RR for the 2026 season.
"You probably can't underestimate the pressure on somebody going into a team like CSK. Being a huge marquee signing, particularly when you have traded someone like Jadeja out of the side as well," Finch remarked.
He also pointed out that despite Samson's strong performance in the latter stages of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, adapting to CSK was always going to be a challenge. "Although he [Samson] had a dream run at the end of the [T20] World Cup and then he's come in [at CSK] and missed out a couple of times, there will still be some pride and pressure," Finch added.
"There's almost some feeling that you can tend to overplay it slightly in your own head that you want to get to a new franchise and really lay down a marker and say I'm here."
Finch concluded by lauding Samson for overcoming early setbacks and delivering a performance that met expectations. "This is what you're traded for and the superstar that you've been crying out for. So, the fact that he's batting on a different level is great to see," Finch stated.
CSK's Position in the Playoff Race
Following their commanding win against the Capitals, the five-time champions CSK currently occupy the sixth position on the points table, having secured five victories out of ten matches.
