Synopsis

Less than 24 hours after TMC’s crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal elections, security barriers around Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence were removed. The iron barricades and heavy police presence that restricted public access for years have been withdrawn, bringing immediate relief to local residents.

In a striking and symbolic development, the heavy iron barricades and elaborate security arrangements that had turned the approach to Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat into a virtual fortress have been removed. Less than 24 hours after the Trinamool Congress suffered a massive defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections — including Mamata Banerjee losing from her traditional stronghold Bhowanipore — the road leading to 30B Harish Chatterjee Street was opened to the public.

Security Apparatus Dismantled Overnight

For years, metal scissor barricades had restricted movement on Harish Chatterjee Street near Hazra crossing. Police personnel strictly regulated entry, often asking residents and visitors to show identity proofs. Narrow alleys connecting the street to Kalighat Road were also sealed off. All these restrictions were lifted swiftly on Wednesday morning, surprising local residents.

Locals expressed a mix of emotions. While many felt sad about the political outcome, they admitted relief at regaining easy access to their own neighbourhood. “We had to slow down, answer questions and carry ID cards every time,” said one resident. Another added that relatives often had to take long detours.

Similar Changes at Abhishek Banerjee’s Properties

Security was also scaled down outside the residence of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Police deployment outside his office on Camac Street in central Kolkata was visibly reduced. This rapid rollback of the high-security apparatus, which had been in place since Mamata Banerjee’s second term as Chief Minister, marks a visible shift following the party’s unexpected electoral setback.
