The operation was executed in the Palengi region of Dimow based on precise intelligence regarding the ULFA-I cadre's movements.

Guwahati, May 6: Authorities in Assam have detained an individual believed to be associated with the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) during a recent operation in Sivasagar district. Officials reported the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and explosives from the suspect.

The individual has been identified as Rontu Asom, also known as Biren Chetia, hailing from Bejpathar village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Moran Police Station in Dibrugarh district.

According to police reports, the operation was initiated in the Palengi area of Dimow following credible intelligence about the movement of the ULFA-I cadre.

During the operation, security forces seized a pistol, ten rounds of live ammunition, and eight grenades from the suspect's possession.

The police have taken the militant into custody for further questioning. Officials suspect that he may have connections with the operational network of the banned insurgent group in Upper Assam.

Investigations are currently underway to determine if he was involved in efforts to re-establish sleeper cells or facilitate the transport of arms and explosives in the area.

Police sources have indicated that further inquiries are being conducted to explore potential connections between the suspect and other active members of the group.

This arrest occurs amidst a surge in anti-insurgency operations conducted by Assam Police and other security forces targeting ULFA-I throughout the state in recent months.

Security agencies have increased surveillance and search operations in Upper Assam districts following intelligence reports of renewed attempts by the group to revive its activities and recruit local youth.

In recent months, several alleged supporters and members of ULFA-I have been apprehended in districts such as Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Sivasagar. During various operations conducted jointly by Assam Police and central security forces, arms, ammunition, and incriminating documents have also been confiscated.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has consistently emphasized that the state government will persist in its efforts to combat insurgent activities and maintain a vigilant stance against any attempts to disrupt peace in Assam.
