Vodafone Idea Share Price: On Wednesday, May 5, shares of Vodafone-Idea (Vi) saw a rise. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE) it rose by 4 percent to Rs 11.24. The reason for the rise in the company’s shares was attributed to the company’s announcement of major changes at the board level. The country’s veteran businessman Kumar Mangalam Birla has been appointed as non-executive chairman by the telecom company.
Giving information in a regulatory filing, the company said that its board has given approval to appoint Kumar Mangalam Birla, who is currently a non-executive director, as the non-executive chairman of the company with effect from May 5, 2026. Kumar Mangalam, head of Aditya Birla Group, has been closely associated with the strategic and financial development of Vodafone-Idea for the last several years.
Birla will replace Ravinder Takkar
As part of this high level reshuffle within the country’s leading telecom company, Birla has got the responsibility of non-executive chairman. He will replace Ravinder Takkar. Takkar has left the post of chairman. However, he will remain part of the board as non-executive vice-chairman and support the new leadership structure. The company said the arrangement is aimed at ensuring continuity by strengthening board-level oversight.
Shares surge due to Vi’s announcements
The announcement evoked a positive reaction in the market, and Vodafone-Idea shares moved up in trade. Market participants said the development improved sentiment around the stock, which has been under pressure due to financial concerns. This change in leadership comes amid Vodafone-Idea’s struggle with AGR (adjusted gross revenue) dues and high debt.
The Supreme Court’s 2019 decision significantly increased the company’s liabilities, which the government later partially recalculated to around Rs 64,046 crore. Although this brought some relief to the company, the total repayment burden is still huge.
Payment of Rs 124 crore of outstanding AGR
Vodafone-Idea still faces long repayment cycles. AGR payments are to be made over the next ten years, with installments starting from FY32. The company also has to make annual payments of Rs 124 crore towards specific AGR dues from March 2026 to March 2031, along with larger structured payments in subsequent years.
Pressure on company due to spectrum dues
Apart from AGR liabilities, Vodafone-Idea also has huge spectrum payments. Analysts estimate the total spectrum dues over the next three years to be around Rs 49,000 crore and payments will increase rapidly over time. These responsibilities remain a big challenge for the financial stability of the company.
Telecom operator still in loss
The telecom operator is still in loss. It reported a loss of Rs 17,418 crore for the nine months ending December 2025, while the net worth stood at negative Rs 87,744 crore. Despite relief measures and fund-raising efforts, the company is yet to return to profit.
Selected tariffs amid industry trends
On tariff prices, Vodafone-Idea has said that it will make selective tariff adjustments rather than large-scale increases. This happened because Bharti Airtel Like competitors have already increased prepaid tariffs by about 4-5 percent. Analysts expect further tariff increases in the telecom sector, which if implemented could support the industry’s revenue growth.
However, board-level changes have improved sentiment for the short term, vodafone-idea India’s outlook depends on tariff reforms, continued policy support and execution of its long-term financial restructuring plan.
