Sam Smith started out their fashion evolution pretty simply when they emerged into the world of music in 2012. With the release of their debut album In the Lonely Hour in 2014, the star wore a simple black jacket and trousers for the cover artwork, and it wasn't irregular to see them on red carpets in simply tailored suits.

Since then, however, Sam's style has completely changed - marked by their bizarre latex ensemble worn at the Brit Awards in February 2023. Let's take a look at some of their boldest - and perhaps most regrettable - fashion choices over the years.

Sam's black rubber suit featured huge puffed arms and legs, giving the impression the Money On My Mind hitmaker was encased in a giant dark balloon.

The inflatable jumpsuit was custom-made for the musician by designer Harri.

Harri told the BBC at the time that Sam reached out just five days before the red carpet to ask if he could create the costume, which was only finished an hour before the red carpet began.

One of the strangest ensembles to come out of Paris Fashion Week 2024 had to be Sam's runway look for the Vivienne Westwood Womenswear Fall/Winter season.

The "punk-inspired" look was comprised of what looked like a multicoloured tartan loincloth and matching heeled boots, plus bright red knee-high socks that left Sam's thighs bare, a long-sleeved beige jumper and a tartan cloak across their shoulders.

The strangest part of the whole ensemble might have been the gnarled walking stick Sam was handed, giving them a look of Gandalf as they strutted their stuff down the runway.

While I personally think Sam looked amazing at the 2026 Met Gala, their 52-pound gown seemed a step too far when you consider the practicalities.

The stunning black dress featured sparkles and was paired with a feather fascinator, skimming into a mermaid-tail style bottom that made it difficult for the singer to move their legs, and a fur trim near the collar.

The gown was designed by Sam's partner Christian Cowan and inspired by the showgirl era - I'm just not sure I could cope with such a weighty accessory on the night.

At the 2023 Grammy Awards, where Sam performed their track Unholy alongside Kim Petras, they wore a floor-length red coat with puff sleeves, and a matching top hat with a veil over their eyes.

Sam later stripped the coat off to reveal a skintight pair of red latex dungarees that left nothing to the imagination, and a pair of matching heels - plus some shiny devil horns for their on-stage performance.

The coat itself wasn't too bad, but once it came off to reveal yet more latex, I was rolling my eyes.

Far from their usual style of dressing up, Sam donned a massively oversized sweatshirt and jeans to the UK premiere of Barbie in 2023.

The navy blue jumper said IB XL across the front, while the jeans were long and wide enough to cover Sam's shoes.

The non-binary star was criticised for "missing an opportunity" to show off their imagination at the pink-themed premiere, with one fan tweeting: "The one time they most had the opportunity to show all the way out and they opted for this instead."
