Volkswagen previews Golf R that will race in Nurburgring next year

New Delhi: While quite a few enthusiasts are waiting for a five-cylinder Golf R, Volkswagen has something really cool for a hardcore hot hatchback. Wolfsburg’s small power thunder will race at the Nurburgring next year to mark 25 years of the R models. It was something that started in 2002 with the Gold R32 and lives on to this day with the eighth-generation Golf and its range-topping R variant.

This Golf R is specially developed with Max Kruse Racing; the track-only machine is turning out to be a different species of beast. VW hasn’t said anything about the technical aspect of the car, although there are some obvious changes to the car. The biggest one is a more aggressive aerodynamic body kit, complete with a prominent front splitter.

For the back, VW has removed the tailgate glass to make way for an opaque panel supporting a gargantuan wing. It comes with boxy wheel arches, making it differ the race car from the road-going counterpart. There’s also a radical diffuser and vented front fenders are clear signs this isn’t an everyday Golf R.

The missing quad exhaust tips, which are a signature of the Volkswagen Golf R, might hint at an all-electric setup, but this is very much an ICE-driven machine. Functional hood vents suggest the need for additional cooling, while a side-exit exhaust spotted in official images also points to its ICE credentials.

VW is, for now, calling the Golf R 24H a show car, but development of the race-spec model is happening as well, with plans to take it to the Nürburgring Nordschleife next year. In fact, the Head of Volkswagen R has made a bold claim that it is “the most spectacular Golf R to date.” Of course, there is no expectation for it to have a road-legal version, as it is purely meant for racing.

A statement from Martin Hue, VW spokesperson, had hinted a couple of years ago at a “more track-oriented version” For now, we just wait for something quite hardcore to arrive.
