In a candid conversation with Bollywood Bubble, veteran actor Dibyendu Bhattacharyacelebrated for his roles in Mirzapur and Dev.Dopened up about the deep-rooted colorism that persists in the entertainment world. Despite his established reputation as a powerhouse performer, Bhattacharya revealed a recent, jarring experience where he was explicitly told he was being replaced due to the color of his skin.
The actor shared that he had been cast for an advertisement, with discussions spanning nearly five days. However, the situation took a sudden turn just 72 hours before the cameras were set to roll. Recounting the incident, he said:
“This is an issue and it is very rooted. Just a few days ago, I got cast for an advertisement and for 4-5 days discussions went on and just three days later, the shoot was supposed to happen. So I asked them are we doing the shoot or not? They said, ‘Nahi Dada, aapko replace kiya kyunki aap kaale ho aur kaala actor nahi chahiye.’”
Bhattacharya expressed his disappointment not just with the rejection, but with the lack of social awareness that allows such blatant bias to go unchecked. He emphasized that these prejudices are a result of a larger systemic failure in early education and the shaping of social values.
“It’s very unfortunate that you can’t do anything. “If you do not introduce social ethics, norms in primary education as your foundation, then you will not be able to do this.” he said.
While the actor has built a successful career through his training at the National School of Drama (NSD) and his undeniable talent, his revelation serves as a stark reminder that even seasoned actors are not immune to the industry’s obsession with conventional beauty standards. By speaking out, Bhattacharya continues to challenge the “rooted” issues that often prioritize skin tone over artistic merit.
