SRH vs PBKS: Today, on Wednesday, May 6, in the match being played against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the patience of Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting seemed to be breaking. Missing catches one after the other made Ponting so frustrated that his anger became clearly visible on the field. The sequence of poor fielding of Punjab in the IPL 2026 season is showing no sign of stopping. The limit was reached when, within just three overs, Cooper Connolly, Shashank Singh and Lockie Ferguson dropped easy catches like ‘laddus’.
When Ponting’s temper rose
This whole drama happened when Ponting was giving a broadcast interview around the 10th over. Connolly and Shashank had already dropped the catches of Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. Ponting was still reacting to those mistakes when Ferguson dropped another easy catch at mid-wicket right in front of him. After the third consecutive drop catch, Ponting said angrily, ‘I feel like picking up this mic and throwing it on the field right now.’
series of mistakes
In the eighth over, Cooper Connolly left a very easy catch of Ishan Kishan (9 runs) at deep square-leg on the ball of Ferguson. In the ninth over, Shashank Singh took a catch at deep backward square leg on the ball of Yuzvendra Chahal. This is like a nightmare for Shashank, this was his fifth drop catch in the last three matches.
When Ponting was talking live during the interview, Ferguson gave another life to Kishan on the score of 18. Poor Chahal could not believe it and sat on the field in frustration. Not only this, during the strategic timeout, Ponting himself went to the field to encourage the players, but it had no effect. Wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh also missed the stumping opportunity in Chahal’s next over.
There is some virus behind Shashank
After the match, Ponting clearly said that there would be no excuse for poor fielding, especially when the team had practiced extensively under the lights the day before. However, he also defended Shashank Singh.
Ponting expressed sympathy and said, ‘To be honest, it has become like a virus for us. We have dropped a lot of catches this season. The boys are working very hard, but poor Shashank is having bad luck. It seems as if the catches are chasing them. He further told that Shashank is making a comeback after a hamstring injury and for the last one week he has worked hard on catching, but his luck on the field is not supporting him.
heavy price for mistakes
Hyderabad batsmen took full advantage of these opportunities. Ishan Kishan added 55 runs, while Heinrich Klaasen scored his half-century in just 32 balls. With the help of these lifers, Sunrisers Hyderabad crossed the 200-mark in just 17.1 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and set a mountain-like score for Punjab.
