Shillong, May 7: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, has assured the traditional leaders of Ri-Bhoi district that development initiatives in the contested Mawlasnai area and nearby villages will proceed in collaboration with the Assam Government.
Sangma emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation with Assam to prevent any disruptions in development efforts, noting that steps are being taken to address specific discrepancies.
He mentioned that issues related to “GPS and mapping discrepancies,” where certain villages are incorrectly categorized under Assam, will be addressed with the relevant authorities.
Additionally, the Chief Minister indicated that a review of village-wise electrification under Central schemes is planned, and he will discuss healthcare staffing challenges in Primary Health Centres, including Mawlasnai, with the Health Department.
Addressing concerns regarding safety in border regions, he stated that the district administration would enhance its presence through designated officers for improved monitoring and response.
Sangma also encouraged residents to utilize the CM Connect helpline (1971) for addressing grievances, promising prompt action on the complaints received. These commitments were made during a meeting with the traditional heads of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri Bhoi at St Paul’s Parish Hall in Nongpoh.
Mawlasnai and surrounding areas are part of the remaining six disputed regions between Meghalaya and Assam, which will be discussed in the upcoming round of negotiations. Six other areas of contention have already been resolved.
The discussions had been stalled due to the recent Assembly elections in Assam, but with the elections concluded, the next round of border talks to address the remaining disputes is anticipated to commence shortly.
In addition, the Chief Minister announced financial support for bolstering traditional institutions, revealing that Rs 50 lakh has been allocated for the construction of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, Ri-Bhoi office.
Sangma reiterated the significance of traditional institutions in governance, stating, “Our community and traditional institutions are our greatest strength. No development model in Meghalaya can succeed without their involvement.”
