Guwahati, May 7: In a significant move against organized crime, the Basistha Police apprehended ten suspected dacoits during a well-coordinated operation in the areas of Khanapara and Sijubari on Thursday.
The individuals taken into custody have been named as Bipul Ali alias Boro, Ramjan Ali, Piru Ali alias Gaji Ali, Nasir Ali, Asadur Rahman, Sahidur Ali, Abdul Basti alias Dangor, Mukta Hussain alias Xoru, and Mohammad Ali Sahil. Authorities reported that an additional suspect was also detained during the operation.
“We arrested them in Khanapara and executed a raid at a lodge in Sijubari. All ten are known criminals,” stated a Basistha Police representative.
During the operation, law enforcement recovered an air gun, RR units utilized in telecom towers, and various tools believed to be used in dacoities. “We also seized several tools associated with dacoities and four vehicles,” the official added.
The police characterized the arrested individuals as habitual offenders, noting their involvement in tower thefts and hijackings of warehouses throughout Assam.
Investigators revealed that the gang operated without specific targets, engaging in opportunistic robberies and thefts across various locations in Assam.
“This gang does not have a defined target. They commit thefts wherever opportunities arise and operate in multiple areas of Assam,” the official explained.
Authorities are currently working to uncover the full scope of the gang's operations and any potential connections to recent dacoity incidents reported in Guwahati and surrounding districts.
The arrests come at a time when there is heightened concern regarding a surge in robberies and break-ins in Guwahati since the start of the year.
On January 30, three robbers reportedly broke into two apartments at Nirupama Apartment on Chilaray Path in Beltola, a case that investigators later connected to a larger trend of organized residential burglaries in the city.
Previously, on January 22, police apprehended two individuals related to another dacoity case from Ganeshpara under the jurisdiction of the Fatashil Ambari Police Station.
These incidents collectively have raised alarms about the rising occurrence of armed robberies, dacoities, and apartment break-ins in Guwahati.
