Guwahati, May 7: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which had been in effect since March 15 due to the Assembly elections, has been lifted in four states and one Union Territory following the conclusion of the electoral process and the announcement of results.

According to an official statement released from Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi on May 7, the ECI confirmed that with the results declared for the Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry, as well as bye-elections in various constituencies across Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura, the MCC is now no longer in effect in these regions.

“With the results of the General Election to the Legislative Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and UT of Puducherry, 2026, along with Bye-elections in Assembly Constituencies of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura being declared by the respective Returning Officers, the Model Code of Conduct has ceased to be in operation immediately,” stated the Commission in its correspondence addressed to the Cabinet Secretary, Chief Secretaries, and Chief Electoral Officers of the relevant states and UTs.

However, the letter indicated that the MCC will remain in effect in the 144-Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal, where the Commission has ordered a fresh poll.

With the MCC lifted in most areas, newly elected governments can now resume their regular governance activities, including policy announcements and administrative decisions that were previously restricted during the election period.

The Model Code of Conduct consists of guidelines established by the Election Commission to oversee the behavior of political parties and governments during elections. When in force, it prevents governments from launching new schemes, making significant policy changes, or utilizing official resources for electoral advantages.

The Assembly elections and bye-polls were held in several phases on April 9, 23, and 29, with the counting of votes and results declaration occurring on May 4.

The directive from the EC, signed by Under Secretary Prafull Awasthi, has been distributed to all relevant authorities for compliance and information.
