Sagar: A massive protest was organized on Thursday by the Jana Horata Vedike (People's Action Forum) against the proposed Besuru Nuclear Power Plant. The forum declared that the agitation would not cease until the government formally issues a written declaration stating that there is no such proposal.
A large protest march commenced from Shivappa Nayaka Circle, traversed through the major streets of the city, and culminated in a public meeting at Gandhi Maidan. Following the meeting, a memorandum was submitted to the government through the Assistant Commissioner. Senior Socialist leader and former Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa inaugurated the protest meet.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Gopalakrishna Beluru asserted, "The Besuru Nuclear Power Plant is not needed in Besuru or anywhere else in our state. We will not tolerate the imposition of new projects on people who have already been displaced thrice to provide light to the state. Even if I lose my MLA post, I will not allow this plant to come up." He promised to ensure that no land is sanctioned at the state level and urged MP B.Y. Raghavendra to pressure the Center to deny permission. "The establishment of this plant will completely destroy this region. I am ready for any sacrifice to stop projects that are harmful to the people," he added.
