The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) maintained their chances for IPL 2026 with a narrow nine-run victory over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on May 8. This marked their third win of the season.
LSG set a formidable target of 209 runs, bolstered by Mitchell Marsh's impressive 111 runs. In response, RCB managed to score 203 runs for the loss of six wickets, despite notable contributions from Rajat Patidar (61 runs) and a late push from Tim David (40 runs), Krunal Pandya (28 runs), and Romario Shepherd (23 runs). LSG's bowlers held their composure during the crucial final overs.
Bowling Highlights
Leading the bowling attack for LSG was Prince Yadav, who recorded figures of 3 wickets for 33 runs in four overs. Shahbaz Ahmed also made a significant impact, taking two wickets while conceding 33 runs in three overs.
Marsh's Stellar Performance
Mitchell Marsh was the star of the match, achieving his second IPL century. He formed a strong opening partnership of 95 runs with Arshin Kulkarni, scoring 76 runs off just 32 balls at a remarkable strike rate of 237.50. Marsh's explosive innings set the tone for LSG's batting.
He later completed his century in just 49 balls, contributing significantly to LSG's total. His dismissal at 165/2 ended a crucial 70-run partnership with Nicholas Pooran, who also played a vital role in the innings.
Rishabh Pant's Late Surge
After Marsh's exit, Nicholas Pooran and captain Rishabh Pant added a quick 29 runs for the third wicket. Pant's explosive finish, scoring 32 runs off 10 balls, including four fours and two sixes, propelled LSG past the 200-run mark, concluding their innings at 209/3.
RCB's Chase Falls Short
In their chase for a revised target of 213 runs, RCB faced early setbacks, losing both openers, Jacob Bethell (4) and Virat Kohli (0), leaving them at 9/2. However, a 95-run partnership between Devdutt Padikkal (34) and Rajat Patidar helped stabilize their innings.
Despite Patidar's quick fifty, RCB struggled to maintain momentum after his dismissal. Tim David and Krunal Pandya attempted to revive the innings with a 46-run partnership, but ultimately, RCB fell short by 10 runs, finishing at 203/6.
Conclusion
With this victory, the Lucknow Super Giants keep their playoff aspirations alive, marking their first home win after eight matches. The match showcased thrilling performances from both teams, particularly from Marsh and Yadav, ensuring an exciting contest.
