Udupi: In a bid to prevent increasing incidents of house thefts in the district and address security concerns of residents leaving their homes locked while travelling or away for work, the Udupi district police have introduced a new initiative called the ‘Locked House Beat System’ (LHBS).

Under the programme, police personnel will keep special watch on temporarily locked houses when residents are away for travel, work or other purposes.

As part of the initiative, beat staff attached to the concerned police station limits will visit such houses and ensure proper security and safety during both day and night.

Residents of Udupi district planning to leave their homes locked for travel or other programmes can inform the district police control room by calling the special helpline number 0820-2526709.

People availing the service must also send details to the WhatsApp number provided by the control room. The information should include the date and time of departure and return, the exact residential address, and a selfie photograph taken standing in front of the house.

Following this, the district control room will forward the details to the concerned police station and beat staff of that area. Police personnel will then monitor the house and ensure its security till the specified return date and time shared through WhatsApp.

The police department clarified that the facility is available only for individual/private houses and will not apply to multi-storey flats or apartments.

Police have also appealed to the public not to share house details or personal information with any unauthorised or unknown phone numbers.
