Petrol Pump: People often visit a petrol pump solely to refuel their vehicles with petrol or diesel, departing immediately thereafter. However, did you know that every petrol pump in the country offers several essential amenities to the general public completely free of charge? Petrol pumps are strictly prohibited from charging any fee for these facilities. If a petrol pump refuses to provide these services, a formal complaint can be lodged against it.
Many people remain unaware of these rights; consequently, they are unable to avail themselves of these facilities even when the need arises. In light of this, let us explore six essential free amenities available at petrol pumps.
Number 1 – Quality Check for Petrol and Diesel
If you have any doubts regarding the quality of the petrol or diesel being dispensed, you can request a fuel quality check at the petrol pump. This is typically done using a "filter paper test." Additionally, if you suspect that you are being supplied with a lesser quantity of fuel than requested, you have the right to demand a quantity check. The petrol pump cannot refuse such a request, nor can it levy any charges for performing these checks.
Number 2 – First Aid Kit Facility
Road accidents can occur at any time. Therefore, it is mandatory for petrol pumps to have a First Aid Kit readily available. In the event of an accident requiring immediate primary medical attention, you can request a First Aid Kit from the nearest petrol pump.
Number 3 – Emergency Phone Calls
If your mobile phone is switched off, runs out of battery, or if you need to make a call during an emergency, you can utilize the free telephone facility available at the petrol pump. Petrol pump employees are obligated to assist you in such situations.
Number 4 – Free and Clean Restrooms
Finding a clean restroom during a long journey can often be a significant challenge—a difficulty particularly faced by women. Consequently, it is mandatory for petrol pumps to provide clean and free restroom facilities. Furthermore, you do not even need to be a paying customer to use these restrooms. If you find the restroom in an unsanitary condition, you have the right to file a complaint.
Number 5 – Clean Drinking Water
It is mandatory for every petrol pump to make arrangements for providing clean drinking water to the public. You can drink water there or even refill your water bottle.
Number 6 – Free Air for Tires
Apart from all the above, many people even today pay to have air filled in their tires, whereas this service is completely free of charge. A petrol pump cannot levy any fee for filling air in tires, regardless of whether or not you have purchased petrol from them.
Where to File a Complaint?
If a petrol pump refuses to provide you with these facilities, you can register a complaint on pgportal.gov.in. Additionally, complaints can also be lodged by calling the toll-free number of the respective petrol company. It is also mandatory for every petrol pump to maintain a complaints and suggestions register, which customers are entitled to request.
