About 17 percent of the country's population lives in Uttar Pradesh, but the state ranks 18th in terms of total crimes.
What is NCRB Crime Rate and why is it important?
Crime rate is considered the most reliable standard to understand the actual situation of crime in any state. Crime rate means the number of crimes recorded per one lakh population. This figure balances the effects of the state's population and size, so it is considered a scientific and authentic basis for comparing crimes.
UP's position in crimes like murder, rape and robbery
According to the NCRB report, Uttar Pradesh has been in a better position in many serious crimes compared to 28 states and 8 union territories of the country. Uttar Pradesh ranks 29th in cases of murder, while the state ranks 26th in cases of attempt to murder. The state ranks 20th in cases of outraging modesty. UP ranks lowest in the country i.e. 36th in cases of kidnapping for ransom.

UP leads the country in conviction rate in women crime cases
Uttar Pradesh has reached the top position in the country in terms of punishing the culprits in crimes against women. UP's conviction rate in crime against women cases has been recorded at 76.6 percent, which is the highest in the country. This figure is much better than other states. This rate was only 1.6 percent in West Bengal, 4.8 percent in Karnataka, 14.8 percent in Telangana, 17 percent in Kerala, 19 percent in Punjab and 23.4 percent in Tamil Nadu. It is clear from these figures that the chances of survival of women who commit crimes in Uttar Pradesh are very less.
UP's position strong in controlling serious crimes
The murder rate per lakh population in Uttar Pradesh has been recorded at only 1.3. This is much lower than Telangana (2.7), Jharkhand (3.7) and Punjab (2.5). The process of investigation and filing of charge sheets has been fast even in big cities of the state. The charge sheet rate in crimes against women was recorded at 84.4 percent in Kanpur and 83.7 percent in Lucknow.
Better situation in terms of jail management and women prisoners also
In terms of capacity and discipline in jails, the situation of Uttar Pradesh is said to be better than other states. The occupancy rate in the women jails of the state is only 36.7 percent, due to which the women prisoners are getting a better and organized environment. At the same time, the occupancy rate of central jails is 74.3 percent, which is considered much lower and better than the 118.4 percent rate of Punjab and 149.9 percent of Kerala.
DGP Rajiv Krishna said crime rate is the biggest standard.
Rajeev Krishna said that the NCRB report makes it clear that crime rate is the most scientific and statistical basis for comparing crime between states. He said that against the national crime rate of 252.3, the crime rate of UP is only 180.2, which is the result of continuous reforms and planned efforts. The DGP said that the zero tolerance policy of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is now visible effective at the ground level.
Law and order strengthened by modern policing and strict action
According to the DGP, in the last nine years, modern police stations, anti-Romeo squads, women's help desks, fast track courts and strict action against organized crimes have strengthened law and order in the state. He said that UP Police takes every small and big complaint seriously. Complaints received through digital means are also immediately processed and converted into FIRs, if necessary. The DGP said that more FIRs being registered is an indication of a sensitive, transparent and accessible police system to the people.
