32-year-old Bollywood actress Akansha Ranjan Kapoor recently shared her experience with egg freezing. Speaking on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast, ‘All About Her,’ the actress explained that she viewed it as a smart move; while she does not wish to have a child right now, her biological clock is ticking rapidly. However, once the egg freezing process began, she found the entire experience to be extremely challenging. In her conversation with Soha Ali Khan, she revealed that she experienced a constant sensation of heaviness and pain to the point where she struggled even to walk or stand. Over the past few years, the practice of egg freezing has gained significant popularity. Yet, it is by no means an easy undertaking. If you are considering egg freezing, this article offers a comprehensive overview of the entire process.
Dr. Mannan Gupta, Chairman and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Alantis Healthcare, New Delhi, explains that egg freezing—also known as oocyte cryopreservation—is a medical procedure that allows women to preserve their healthy eggs for future conception. This medical process provides women with the time and freedom to focus on their careers and personal goals without the immediate pressure of family planning. However, a reality of this procedure is that the egg freezing process is far more complex than it is often portrayed to be.
The Egg Freezing Process
Stage One
Experts explain that the egg freezing journey begins with a woman's initial consultation with her doctor. During this appointment, the doctor reviews the woman's medical history to assess her overall health, menstrual cycle, and ovarian reserve. The ovarian reserve assessment indicates the quantity and quality of healthy eggs currently available within her ovaries. "We typically recommend conducting laboratory tests and ultrasounds to evaluate the functioning of the ovaries," notes Dr. Gupta. Armed with this medical information, the doctor is able to formulate a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to the woman's individual needs.
Stage Two
In a normal, natural cycle, only one egg is produced for ovulation. The goal of an egg-freezing cycle is to retrieve as many eggs as possible within a single cycle. To achieve this, hormonal injections are administered daily for approximately ten to twelve days to stimulate the ovaries to produce a greater number of eggs than usual. During this phase of the egg-freezing process, patients are required to undergo frequent blood tests and ultrasounds to monitor the growth rate of the follicles—the small sacs within the ovaries where the eggs are housed.
Stage Three
This stage involves retrieving the eggs and sending them to a laboratory for assessment. Only fully mature and healthy eggs are selected for freezing, or cryopreservation. The eggs undergo a process known as vitrification. This is a rapid-freezing technique that prevents the formation of ice crystals inside the cells, thereby preserving the quality of the eggs. The frozen eggs are stored in specialized containers at extremely low temperatures until the woman decides she is ready to use them.
Stage Four
In this stage, the eggs are fertilized and transferred into the uterus when a woman is ready to conceive. To prepare for this, the frozen eggs first undergo a thawing process. Subsequently, in the laboratory, they are fertilized using the male partner's sperm through *in vitro* fertilization (IVF) techniques. Finally, the resulting embryo is transferred into the woman's uterus.
How Painful Is the Entire Process?
Many women report experiencing physical discomfort due to the hormonal stimulation involved in the process. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to issues such as bloating, mood swings, headaches, and a sensation of heaviness in the lower abdomen. This occurs because the ovaries, located in this region, enlarge significantly beyond their normal size. Due to this ovarian enlargement, some women may experience physical discomfort or face difficulties with mobility. In addition to physical discomfort, it is also common for patients to experience emotional stress resulting from the rapid hormonal shifts occurring within the body. While most women experience at least some degree of discomfort, the intensity of this discomfort can vary significantly from one woman to another.
Is Pregnancy Using Frozen Eggs Always Successful?
Experts point out that oocyte cryopreservation—or egg freezing—does not provide a guarantee of becoming pregnant in the future. Several factors play a pivotal role in the success rate of conceiving using frozen eggs; these include the woman's age at the time of freezing, the quality of the frozen eggs, and other general health conditions related to her fertility. It is not a completely foolproof or perfect option. Generally, women who freeze their eggs at a younger age tend to achieve better outcomes compared to those who freeze their eggs later in life—particularly in terms of fertilization rates and the likelihood of delivering a healthy baby.
