New Delhi: A shocking incident occurred after an ancient Shiva temple (believed to be 800 years old) was demolished in Warangal, Telangana. The temple is situated inside a historic mud fort in Ashok Nagar village in Khanapur mandal.

The tension rose in the region as the temple was allegedly razed during land-levelling work for the construction of an Integrated School project. The temple is said to have been built during the reign of Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva and is from the Kakatiya era, locals said.

After the demolition, the issue escalated, and villagers showed anger and said that the Shiva temple had been ignored for years, and despite urging authorities to restore the temple, the government didn’t act on the villagers’ appeals.

Locals also alleged that several people targeted the temple many times in search of hidden treasure and damaged the site in the process over the years. However, the demolition has left the locals furious, and residents asked, ‘How can a historical temple be demolished without the Archaeology Department’s permission?’

It all started when the state government allotted more than 30 acres of land in the area for the construction of an Integrated School under an education initiative.

During the site-clearing process, the ancient temple structure was allegedly flattened.

Villagers warned the authorities that if action is not taken against those responsible, then the residents will stage protests.

Officials visited the site

After the protest at the temple, Warangal District Collector Satya Saharada and Narsampet MLA Donthi Madhava Reddy arrived at the scene.

MLA Donthi said that the land was selected for the school project because it has vast open space and greenery, but the officials failed to notice an ancient temple was there during the survey.

Later, MLA Reddy assured the locals that the Shiva Temple would be restored in the same area alongside the proposed school. Furthermore, he promised that an idol of Goddess Saraswati would be set up at the reconstructed shrine.
