Synopsis

Sanam Bewafa's 1991 success launched Chandni as an overnight sensation. However, a restrictive three-year contract with director Saawan Kumar Tak prevented her from taking other film offers, stalling her career. She later moved to the US, reinvented herself as classical dancer Navodita Sharma, and built a successful dance academy.

When Sanam Bewafa arrived in theatres in 1991, it became one of the biggest commercial successes of its time. Produced and directed by Saawan Kumar Tak, the romantic drama featured Salman Khan alongside newcomer Chandni. Made on a modest budget reportedly close to Rs 90 lakh, the film went on to earn nearly Rs 12–14 crore at the Indian box office, an extraordinary achievement during that era.

For Navodita Sharma, who was introduced to audiences with the screen name Chandni, the success transformed her into an overnight sensation. Her graceful appearance, expressive acting and strong screen presence captured public attention almost immediately. Industry insiders reportedly viewed her as one of Bollywood’s most promising new heroines, and filmmakers were eager to cast her in upcoming productions after the film’s blockbuster run.

A Newcomer Without Industry Support

Unlike many actors who entered Hindi cinema through family influence or established connections, Chandni came into the industry without any film background. She had no relatives in the business and lacked the support system that often helps newcomers survive the competitive environment of Bollywood.

Despite possessing talent and popularity, she had to navigate the industry entirely on her own. Reports shared by Tabassum Talkies later revealed that a major decision early in her career dramatically altered her future in films.

According to the account, Chandni reportedly signed an exclusive three-year agreement with filmmaker Saawan Kumar Tak following the massive success of Sanam Bewafa. The contract allegedly prevented her from accepting projects from other producers during that period. At the time, the arrangement may have appeared beneficial because she had just delivered a superhit debut under his direction.

However, the agreement soon became a serious obstacle in her career.

The Contract That Changed Everything

As per reports discussed by Tabassum Talkies, the problem arose when Saawan Kumar Tak did not immediately launch another film starring Chandni during those three years. Since the contract allegedly restricted her from collaborating with other banners, several film offers slipped away despite her rising popularity.

At a moment when many actresses would typically build momentum through multiple successful projects, Chandni reportedly remained unable to take advantage of the opportunities arriving at her doorstep. Gradually, the excitement surrounding her debut began fading as newer faces entered the industry and audiences shifted attention elsewhere.

By the time she reportedly requested to be released from the agreement, the damage to her career had already taken place. Bollywood, known for moving quickly from one star to another, had already begun focusing on fresh talent.

From Lead Heroine to Supporting Roles

After eventually becoming free from the restrictive contract, Chandni returned to films, but the circumstances had changed completely. The actress who had once been projected as Bollywood’s next leading lady was no longer receiving the same kind of offers.

Instead of major heroine-centric roles, she started appearing in secondary characters and supporting parts. She worked alongside stars such as Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor, but the projects failed to restore the momentum she had enjoyed after her debut success.

Even though she appeared in films including 1942: A Love Story and Ikke Pe Ikka, her career never returned to the heights many had once predicted. Over time, film offers reportedly became increasingly rare, and her journey in mainstream Bollywood slowly came to a halt.

A New Life Far Away From Bollywood

Realising that her dreams in the Hindi film industry were no longer unfolding as expected, Chandni decided to begin a new chapter away from cinema. She married Florida-based businessman Satish Sharma and relocated to the United States.

While many former actresses disappeared completely from public attention after leaving films, Chandni chose a different path. Instead of remaining defined by her unfinished Bollywood career, she reinvented herself professionally and personally.

Returning to her original name, Navodita Sharma, she focused on her training as a classical dancer and established a dance academy called C Studios in Florida. Through the academy, she created a unique style that combined Indian classical dance, Bollywood choreography, hip-hop and Latin influences, helping younger audiences abroad connect with Indian performing arts in a modern format.

Building Success in America

Navodita Sharma gradually built a successful identity outside the entertainment industry she once struggled within. Her students and performers eventually appeared at several prestigious venues and events across the United States, including Disney, Hard Rock Live at Universal Studios, weddings, cultural conventions and even NBA-related performances.

She also launched an initiative called Bollywood Magic in collaboration with the Orlando Magic. The cultural partnership organised events at the Amway Center aimed at promoting Indian music, fashion and dance to broader American audiences.

Although her Bollywood journey did not unfold the way many expected after the phenomenal success of Sanam Bewafa, Chandni’s story became an example of resilience and reinvention. What began as a promising film career eventually transformed into a completely different success story built through determination, creativity and passion far away from the Hindi film industry.

The Film That Started It All

Released in 1991, Sanam Bewafa revolved around two rival Pathan tribal families locked in a generations-old feud. The story followed the romance between Sher Khan’s son and Fateh Khan’s daughter, whose relationship challenged the hostility between their families.

The film featured performances by Salman Khan, Chandni, Pran and Danny Denzongpa. Reports also state that the movie drew inspiration from the Pakistani Punjabi film Haq Mehar.
