Chennai Super Kings Make Public Appeal Ahead Of IPL 2026 Fixture Vs LSG
Cricket Gully | May 10, 2026 2:39 PM CST

Fans were on Saturday, May 9 requested by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) not to carry any political banners, flags or hoardings to MA Chidambaram Stadium during their IPL 2026 fixture against Lucknow Super Giants.

Ahead of the important clash at Chepauk, the franchise shared a message on social media asking supporters to focus only on cricket and avoid political messaging inside the stadium premises.

CSK posted on their official social media handles:

"Come celebrate cricket and the spirit of the game with us. Anbuden request our superfans to avoid bringing banners, flags or hoardings associated with any political party/person and enjoy the game with full yellove."

The advisory comes at a time when actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) recently succeeded in forming the government after political discussions with several parties over the last few days.

Vijay is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister on Sunday, May 10.

The timing of CSK's statement has attracted attention as large crowds are expected at Chepauk for the IPL match just one day before the swearing-in ceremony.

Previous Whistle Controversy At Chepauk

This is not the first time restrictions linked to political symbols have become a talking point at the stadium.

Earlier this year during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 matches held in Chennai reports claimed that whistles were being stopped from entering the stadium by security officials.

This became a problem because the whistle is also TVK Vijay’s political party's election symbol.

At the same time Whistle Podu is a hugely popular cheer that has become synonymous with Chennai Super Kings and has a rich association with Chepauk for a number of years.

Many a fan expressed astonishment upon being told that whistles were apparently banned in the stadium during World Cup matches and other reports stated that outside vendors were asked not to sell whistles.

TNCA clarifies the matter.

In light of all this criticism and confusion, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has stated that no whistle ban was ever enforced by the TNCA, BCCI or ICC. It had been put in place by the Police and authorities on the field at the time.

A senior official later clarified by saying that no official ban was in place and that the matter occurred due to the over-cautionary nature of security guards on the field.

CSK’s recent statement regarding the Lucknow Super Giants match is likely an effort to ensure there is no repeat of the whistle problem that caused much controversy as there is no room for political messages at a cricket stadium and fans are expected to cheer for their team while enjoying their games.
